Crew Hugh Paterson, Jeff Paterson. for 2003 which started with the Loch Ness Winter Series part 2 then Sufiana returned to Lossiemouth on 31 March right at the end of our welcome. A SW gale forecast did not daunt the spirits as we would have shelter and flat water close to the Moray and Nairn coast. Between 0945 and 1420 we were in the Caledonian canal motoring from Dochgarroch to the sea lock. Once out we did not hoist the main but used the storm jib and reefed foresail. We entered Lossie harbour at 2000, were tied up at 2015 and into the Steamboat at 2030. 40 NM in 5 hr 40 min gives an average speed of 7 knots.

18 April we took Gary Daynes from Portgordon to South Ronaldsay as he was following  longitude 3º from near Lyme Regis to Westray on a sponsored walk for Macmillan Nurses. We left at 1750 and motored overnight with ETA Duncansby Head 0630. Orkney Harbour Radio called us at 0640 “Is that you just past the head?” --- They acted as a radio relay between us and the lads from Orkney Sailing Club in Whitewall Bay who took Gary on to Mainland, Wyre, Rousay and Westray. We waited for the tide to turn and at 1330 set off again and were tied up in Lossie at 0040. After a loss of cooling water the exhaust gases melted the Vetus silencer just as we entered the harbour.

Hugh and I both passed our Yachtmaster Offshore in May on a trip to Buckie and back with the examiner, Paul Slee and Jim Smith.

Another trip to Orkney started on Monday 7th July via Helmsdale, Wick. Lyness, Stromness to Kirkwall via Eynhallow. From Kirkwall we set off at 0240 to be sure to be at the finishing line for the Orkney Challenge Race from Lossiemouth. The first yacht to appear round Mull Head was Krak ATT 05:59 finishing at 06:45:52. The last finisher was Maverick at 12:49:32. After the celebrations we went on to Pierowall Westray , Kettletoft Sanday and then Whitehall Stronsay before setting off for Shetland

An uneventful trip with mist in the morning. Fair isle passed 1200, Sumburgh 1600 tied up Lerwick 1950.

We spent 4 nights in Lerwick (£20 moor + £10 elec) meeting Henri & Genevieve Hermon on Pomme d’Amour plus Antoine Meroc and Alain Comte on Nawel

Thursday 25 July (we could not leave on Friday---) Off to Symbister on Whalsey . We met a couple on a Swedish boat who translated, “min åsna kan båra bára en váska” “my donkey can carry only one suitcase.” Tusen tak.

Sat 26 July  Out Skerries for the first time where we spent a pleasant evening then headed on for Baltasound and on the way ran out of gas. They told us that we could get a bottle at Cullivoe so we went there the next day via Uyea sound as the current would be going North in Bluemull Sound when we got there. This was a great moor. We got our gas and provisions at the shop. (Sun 27 July)

Monday 28th we sailed for Sand Voe a sheltered inlet in the north of the mainland. Three local youths in a rib passed and we invited them for beers. Then Norlantic entered the voe but the crew did not contact us. We carried on to Voe on Tuesday and found a four leaf clover near the shop. Evening meal was moules mariniere at the pier head hotel. From Voe we headed for Walls. Passing through the Sound of Papa we encountered SW winds of 30 knot against the current putting up a nasty sea. We turned back through the sound and anchored in the SW corner of Housa Voe on Papa Stour.

Thur 31 0900 set off from Housa Voe and took three hours to reach Walls. Hugh went shopping (Walls Shop) and we spent the evening in the Boat Club.

Scalloway was the stop for the second Thursday of the week after 2½ hr motoring. The wind kept us in Scalloway till Tuesday 5th so we ate at the Haaf restaurant where an evening meal with wine cost £21 for the two of us. We unmoored at 1020 on Tuesday and set off for Lossiemouth intending to go non stop with 3 hour watches. At 1800 we had passed to the East of Fail Isle and could hear Coast Guard stations as far as Humber then at 2010 we heard a yacht Chablis calling Whitby bridge and their reply on channel 16. At 2145 we heard Yarmouth CG then Dover. We carried on south

0300 Hot chocolate, foresail furled - as the wind was heading. 0710-foresail pulling 50º apparent wind 1106 heard Forth CG - now near Beatrice field 1154 heard Yarmouth CG (58º 05’) 1500 we had a fly past of 5 Tornado aircraft and at 1655 we were tied up in Lossie Harbour.
