We got a list of chomages - canal closures - from Itza Purla. Unfortunately we did not read it fully or we would have taken the Marne route which was the only one open for the entire week we had available. We headed up the Seine learning from the lock-keepers that the Loing canal was closed and the Yonne till Tuesday. We tied up for the night at Varennes. Monday was our bad day. We traveled five miles and arrived at Cannes l’Ecluse to find that it was closed and that work was going on further up the Yonne at Joigny. We chatted with the lock keeper and he told us he was opening at 0630 next morning for four barges and we might fit in with them. We spent the day getting provisions and visited the local bar. We also filled two cans with diesel for the rest of the trip. It was a fair struggle carrying it back to the boat till Pierre went back for a pole to sling the cans on. As the water level was changing we tied to a tree for the night and had a BBQ there. This also meant that we did not go ashore so were quite able to get up in time in the morning.
