Before the race

Sufiana was moored East of the footbridge over the river Lossie. She was moored to two concrete discs, one in midstream and the other just below high water level. Between was a steel cored nylon rope.

The guard geese were not too effective as someone broke the hatch and entered. As far as I could see nothing was removed but the hatch had to be replaced. For almost two years a piece of ply filled the space.

In spring Sufiana was moved to the west of the bridge at half tide and anchored. This seemed to annoy the salmon poachers as the bow anchor line was cut on one occasion. (I learned 20 years later who the culprit was...)

5-0-5 Travelers Trophy at Lossiemouth sailing Club 17/18 May 1986.

The Saturday was too rough for the dinghies to leave the beach and the Lossie Coastguard called us up when we were anchored asking if we were in difficulty. In fact it was the Lossie Sailing Club searider that got into trouble and we lent them tools to repair their broken throttle linkage.

On Sunday we fitted in two races and abandoned the third as the wind rose to 30 knot. One 5-0-5 capsized and broke his mast so we took him alongside and dispensed coffee.+ The dinghies had difficulty returning to the shore against the wind through the narrow gap in the rocks.

Sufiana went on to cover the Laser travelers at Findhorn in July -getting practice for the National 18's

Preparation for the Race

Pam and I decided that we would take enough food to last the whole trip of 15 days. We all put £50 in the kitty and made our lists. We allowed for 4 days of fresh food kept cool by a large bag of ice as I had taken out the fridge to make room for another sleeping cabin. We took part cooked rolls which would have been a complete success if Spar of Forres had not diddled us with some out of date stock.

5 July 86 We left Lossiemouth for Macduff and arrived 5 hours later mooring just ahead of Opulent in a drying area of the harbour. Ian and I went back for the last two days of school. Pam and Suzy went to Macduff on Monday evening to take on duty free stores and clear customs. We listened to Moray Firth Radio all morning hoping to hear ourselves mentioned but they didn’t come near.

Our plan to leave the harbour at 1430 was thwarted as we were asked to leave early so that a freighter could sail. We were at the start too early and were stopped in the water with 10 minutes to go.

With no way on and no wind we crossed the line last and stayed there for 2 hours till the wind arrived from the NW.
